Dear Families,

At PS 398, we believe that strong attendance is the foundation for student success. Every school day matters, and students who attend school consistently are more likely to stay on track academically, socially, and emotionally.

NYC Public Schools Attendance Policy

  • A student is considered absent if they are not in school for any reason, even if the absence is excused (such as illness or religious observance).
  • Families must provide a written explanation (note, email, or doctor’s note) for every absence.
  • Chronic absenteeism is defined as missing 10% or more of the school year (about 18 days). This includes both excused and unexcused absences.

Why Attendance Matters

  • Missing just 2 days per month can add up to nearly 20 days in a school year, putting your child at risk of falling behind academically.
  • Punctuality is equally important. Arriving on time helps your child start the day prepared, confident, and ready to learn.

How Families Can Support Strong Attendance

  • Make sure your child comes to school every day unless they are seriously ill.
  • Schedule doctor’s appointments and family travel outside of school hours whenever possible.
  • Provide the school with up-to-date contact information so we can reach you if needed.
  • Communicate with us right away if your child is experiencing barriers to attendance (such as health issues, housing concerns, or transportation challenges). Our staff is here to support you.

At PS 398, we are committed to partnering with you to ensure your child’s success. If your child begins to show a pattern of absences, our attendance team will reach out to work with you in creating a support plan.

Thank you for making attendance a priority and for your continued partnership in your child’s education.

Sincerely,

Ariana Butler-Bass
Principal
